Gingivitis is a type of periodontal disease that impacts the gums. Gingivitis occurs when plaque and tartar form and build up on the teeth. The bacteria in plaque and tarter can cause the teeth to decay, and the gums to become inflamed and bleed. Symptoms of Gingivitis Many people who suffer from gingivitis don’t even notice a problem until it’s too late. But for those who do experience symptoms, one or more of the following may occur: • Gums are sore • Gums appear more red than normal • Gums are puffy and inflamed • Gums are sensitive to hot and cold • Gums are sensitive to certain types of foods, such as very salty foods • Receding gum line (where the gums shrink back to expose more of the surface of the teeth) • Bleeding gums after eating, brushing or flossing • Pockets between the teeth that collect bits Read the full article...
