What makes our teeth decay? If you’ve ever had a cavity, you’ve experienced decaying of your teeth. But why do teeth decay and what are some of the causes? Tooth decay occurs when an acidic, tacky film called ‘plaque’ forms up on your teeth and begins to break down the surface of your teeth. Plaque is formed when small food particles are combined with bacteria in your mouth and saliva. Sugary drinks and food containing sugar, as well as food and drinks high in carbohydrates are turned into energy by the bacteria in plaque and at the same time, produce acid. The acid, plaque and bacteria, all play a role in tooth decay. By brushing regularly, this prevents the plaque from building up.
