If you are looking into orthodontic work and hoping to find the best way to attain straighter, neater teeth, you are probably wondering about whether you should choose Invisalign or opt for traditional metal braces. However, there are major pros and cons associated with both Invisalign aligners and traditional braces, so in some cases it may be smarter to start out with the traditional braces and then move on to Invisalign.

Why start with traditional braces?

There are a few different reasons why you might benefit from choosing traditional braces before changing over to Invisalign aligners. Firstly, traditional braces are a lot more affordable, and if only part (instead of all) of your treatment involves wearing Invisalign aligners then you will most likely be looking at a smaller bill. Secondly, traditional braces are much better at correcting some of the most common problems that lead patients to want orthodontic treatment in the first place. Specifically, if you have teeth that are very crooked, teeth that are at different heights (e.g. some sitting higher or lower than they should), or have overcrowded teeth, you are much more likely to achieve satisfying results after wearing traditional braces.

Why move on to Invisalign?

Once traditional braces have done most of the difficult work when it comes to shifting teeth, you can consider moving on to Invisalign to make the rest of the adjustments. Once again, there are a few different reasons why you might want to do this. The main reason is that most patients feel much more comfortable when wearing their Invisalign aligners, both physically and psychologically. The lack of metal makes them less visible to other people, and much less likely to cause any mouth abrasions. The aligners are also removed when eating, so it can be easier to keep your mouth appropriate clean.

Finally, it is worth noting that you can move on to Invisalign many years after wearing traditional braces. Many people find that their teeth shift back towards their original alignment after traditional braces are removed, and Invisalign aligners are excellent at correcting this subtle but unwanted movement.
