A family tree is a chart that shows the relationships between your family members over many years. It’s a great way to see where your family has come from and how your ancestors have contributed to this world. If you love mysteries, building your family tree might be a fun hobby for you. As you go, you’ll uncover more information about your heritage and find new family stories to share with your loved ones.

If you are interested in building your own family tree, the best place to start is with what you already know. Download or draw a family tree and add on any information that you uncover. Take a moment and write down everything that you know about your family members. This could be taken from previous conversations you’ve had with your family or from stories that you’ve heard over the dinner table. If you think your family members might know more, have a coffee with them and discuss your unique heritage further. Make sure to record what you’ve learned so you can refer to it later. If you have any family documents such as death, marriage or birth certificates, set them aside. This could save you time and effort spent researching your family genealogy through websites and databases in the long run.

Once you’ve recorded all the information and stories from your family members, you can start researching your heritage further using a free or paid genealogy website or database, depending on what you would prefer. Due to the mass amount of information we have access to on the web, genealogy sites are a great resource to find out more information about your heritage. Genealogy sites allow you to search your family name and can provide you with information about where your family is from, the average life expectancy of your family members, previous family occupations, military services, and so on. Different genealogy sites will tell you different categories of information, so it’s good to visit more than just one. Some genealogy sites have databases based in different geographical locations so make sure to keep that in mind during your search.

You can determine if the site you’re on is a good genealogy site by seeing how detailed the information is. You can also see if it provides you with basic family resources, including birth, marriage and death certificates. Also, check whether you can access the original documents that show your family heritage. Usually, a good genealogy site will either provide the documentation to you or tell you where you can go to access this documentation, so you can determine your next step.

From here, you can take the information you’ve uncovered and do a more detailed search in more specialized websites or databases. If you’ve noticed, for example, that your family tree shows a lot of military occupations, you can search through military databases. You can also find more information from parish records and wills. If you have any questions during your search, there are many support sites, message forums and family tree display tools that can help you along the way.

Good luck!
